State Rankings

Vermont is far and away the healthiest state in the United States. In 2011, it ranked first overall in healthcare determinants, achieving top five rankings in many of the most important categories, including high school graduation rate, violent crime, infectious disease, uninsured residents, public health funding, and early prenatal care, according to statistics provided by UnitedHealthcare. All of these factors are extremely important in determining the overall health of a state. The rate of smoking has decreased by six percent, and the percentages of diabetes, infant mortality, and obesity are among the lowest in the country. Believe it or not, there is still room for improvement in Vermont healthcare. Immunization coverage is relatively low, and occupational fatalities are high, especially for such a small state. Binge drinking is also high, which has adverse effects on Vermont healthcare. However, these hardly detract from the fact that healthcare in Vermont is extremely strong.

Vermont Health Insurance

Unlike its neighbor New Hampshire, Vermont has achieved an overall number one ranking in state healthcare while being a top five state in public health spending with nearly three times more spent per person for public health than their New England neighbors. The number of uninsured Vermonters, though, is far below the national average at 9%, according to the Kaiser Foundation. Residents enjoy well-funded state healthcare, and it shows in the statistics. Healthcare in Vermont is some of the best in the country, and judging by its determinants, will remain so for many years to come. Vermont has several healthcare plans that are highly rated by the NCQA:
