Rhode Island Health Insurance
State Rankings
New England is a very healthy region of the United States, and Rhode Island is certainly no exception. Public health statistics in Rhode Island are very highly ranked, which helps enormously in contributing to its high state ranking. Healthcare in Rhode Island is helped by high public health funding at $111 per person, as well as a low rate of uninsured residents and high immunization coverage. However, a few statistics stick out as being abnormally high in comparison to neighboring states; in particular, child poverty is very high in Rhode Island at 20.4%, which places the state in the bottom half nationwide. Smoking and obesity rates are also curiously high, and the state has a pressing issue with high rates of binge drinking and preventable hospitalizations. Some explanation can be derived from Rhode Island's higher-than-average unemployment rate, which still hovers over 10%. This indicates, though, that Rhode Island healthcare is likely to improve over the coming years.
Rhode Island Health Insurance
Like its neighbors, Rhode Island has a low number of uninsured residents, only 12% according to the Kaiser Foundation. Outcomes, though, are not quite in line with this lofty statistic. UnitedHealthcare reports that Rhode Island still suffers from high numbers of poor mental and physical health days, cardiovascular deaths, and preventable hospitalization. This imbalance indicates that Rhode Island healthcare is going to improve in the coming years once the effect of this high rate of insured residents begins to overcome some of the negative healthcare statistics. Rhode Island has several healthcare plans that are highly rated by the NCQA:
