Mississippi State Rankings

Things are not looking up for Mississippi. Following a disturbing trend of being the least healthy state for the past decade, Mississippi has again been ranked at the bottom in the annual UnitedHealthcare rankings of overall state health. Mississippi has the most children in poverty, the highest obesity rate at a whopping 34.5%, the second highest number of preventable hospitalizations, and the second to least number of primary care physicians. The state is also in the bottom ten in occupational fatalities and number of unemployed residents. These issues may stem from persistently high unemployment, which is currently about two full percentage points higher than the national rate.

On a more positive note, Mississippi has a very low rate of binge drinking, high child immunization coverage, and low violent crime numbers. Unfortunately, these figures do little to offset the incredibly poor statistics for most healthcare determinants. The obesity rate, for example, has nearly tripled in the last two decades, and the smoking rate has only slightly decreased, portending potentially even worse health to come for the state of Mississippi.

Mississippi Healthcare

Because the determinants for overall state health are so poor, healthcare in Mississippi is also poor. The state currently has the highest infant mortality rate in the country, as well as the highest number of cardiovascular deaths and second highest number of cancer deaths. Not surprisingly, then, Mississippi also has the highest number of incidents of premature death. Improving healthcare in Mississippi will likely take a concerted effort to make any noticeable, positive change. Luckily, Mississippi residents still have a wide range of healthcare plans that are highly rated by the NCQA:

UnitedHealthcare Insurance (Mississippi) POS 76.0
Aetna Life Insurance Company (Mississippi) PPO 75.5
UnitedHealthcare Insurance (Mississippi) PPO 75.2
CIGNA (MS) PPO 60.4
