Massachusetts Health Insurance
Massachusetts, much like its New England neighbors, is a very healthy state. This may be partially explained by its well-known healthcare requirement for all citizens - Massachusetts has the lowest number of uninsured residents, only 5%, according to UnitedHealthcare. However, the state still ranks highly in a number of important healthcare determinants, making Massachusetts the fifth healthiest state in the country. It ranks in the top five in lowest smoking rate, occupational fatalities, lack of health insurance, public health funding, immunization coverage, early prenatal care, and primary care physicians, all of which are important to creating good healthcare in Massachusetts. Outcomes are similarly well off, which low numbers of poor mental and physical health days, premature deaths, and infant mortality. Massachusetts even ranks well in smoking rates, obesity rates, and children in poverty. Oddly, the state still has a low ranking in infectious disease, as well as violent crime and binge drinking, but on the whole, Massachusetts healthcare is some of the best in the nation.
Massachusetts is unique in state healthcare in that it requires that all state residents carry health insurance. As a result, besides being the state with the least number of uninsured residents, Massachusetts has high rates of immunization coverage, primary care physicians, and premature death. This also costs the state, which spends $127 per person on public health funding, good for fifth in the nation.
