New England is the healthiest region of the United States, and Connecticut is no exception. The state ranks very highly in all the major healthcare determinant categories, including the categories that are most important to public health. Connecticut healthcare is helped by a number one ranking in child immunization coverage, as well as the third lowest smoking rate and the second lowest obesity rate in the United States. Connecticut is also a top ten state in early prenatal care, number of primary care physicians, occupational fatalities, infectious disease, and children in poverty. High rates of binge drinking are a statistical anomaly in New England. Connecticut follows that trend, ranking 43rd in the category. Interestingly, Connecticut's healthcare outcomes do not yet correspond to such good determinant statistics, suggesting that Connecticut will continue to improve its state healthcare and health statistics.
