WASHINGTON – Scott P. Serota, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association (BCBSA) president and CEO, has accepted an appointment to serve on the American Health Information Community (AHIC), a group formed by Health and Human Services to help with the nationwide transition to electronic health records.

BCBSA commends the administration for its strong leadership on health information technology (IT) and its commitment to a strong public-private approach demonstrated through the formation of AHIC.

“Blue Plans are leaders in advancing health IT, including interoperable systems, personal health records, e-prescribing, and information sharing to improve care, as well as other projects,” explained Serota. ”We look forward to working with other key stakeholders to advance the nationwide adoption of health information technology. This will enable safer, more efficient and higher quality care for all.”

BCBSA welcomes the opportunity to join AHIC to develop concrete, practical steps to secure the vision of an interoperable nationwide health information technology infrastructure to exchange clinical information among providers, payers, consumers and the government. Greater access to health information promises to improve healthcare delivery and enhance the quality of care for millions of Americans.
