Conseco, Inc. (CNO) is the holding company for a group of insurance companies operating throughout the United States that develop, market and administer supplemental health insurance, annuity, individual life insurance and other insurance products. The Company focuses on serving the senior and middle-income markets. It sells its products through three distribution channels: career agents, professional independent producers (some of whom sell one or more of CNO's product lines exclusively) and direct marketing. CNO became the successor to Conseco, Inc. (Old Conseco) in connection with its bankruptcy reorganization that became effective in September 2003.

CNO conducts its business operations through two primary operating segments, based primarily on method of product distribution, and a third segment consisting of businesses in run-off. The segments are Bankers Life, Conseco Insurance Group and Other Business in Run-off.

The Bankers Life segment consists of the businesses of Bankers Life and Casualty Company and Colonial Penn Life Insurance Company. Bankers Life and Casualty markets and distributes Medicare supplement insurance, life insurance, long-term care insurance and fixed annuities to the senior market through approximately 4,000 exclusive career agents and sales managers. Colonial Penn markets graded benefit and simplified issue life insurance directly to consumers through television advertising, direct mail, the Internet and telemarketing. Both Bankers Life and Casualty and Colonial Penn market their products under their own brand names.
