Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) was founded in 1939 and is Rhode Island's largest locally based, non-profit health plan. In 2003, BCBSRI provided health insurance to more than 670,000 members and its commercial market share in Rhode Island was approximately 70 percent.
The company's corporate headquarters are located at 444 Westminster Street, Providence Rhode Island. The other four facilities are also located in downtown Providence, with a total number of employees at 1,100.
BCBSRI is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. It is a separate and distinct company from other Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurers. There are 41 "Blue" insurance companies nationwide. BCBSRI ranks consistently at or near the top of the list of Blues for its achievement of performance goals set by the Association.

You get the most from your coverage when you visit BlueCard PPO Network providers. This plan has an up-front deductible that must be met for most services.
Direct Blue Standard is a traditional health plan that covers hospital and surgical care, outpatient (major medical) care such as office visits, as well as prescription drugs. You can visit any doctor or healthcare facility you choose and still receive coverage. If you visit a doctor in the nationwide BlueCard Program, the paperwork is taken care of for you. You are simply responsible for the applicable co-payment, coinsurance, and/or deductible at the time of your visit.
