According to the article “Overhaul of Health Care Bad for Seniors” by John Fanning on summitdaily.com, many senior citizens are losing their health insurance coverage in 2010 as many insurers have reduced medicare supplement plans or have increased premiums drastically.
Many seniors are currently struggling to get by and paying for health insurance is just another worry on their plate. If the current health care bill passes in Congress, advantage plans may be dismantled and seniors will need to find a prescription drug plan for MedicareD. This can add an additional $25-$50 to the cost of their health care. With many senior citizens living off of only social security this can be disastrous, especially since there is no SS increase for 2010.
Over 12 million Medicare benficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage Plans which represents 23% of the total Medicare population. Many use Medicare supplement insurance as well. Medicare pays about 11% more for a beneficiary to have a Medicare Advantage plan than for original Medicare on average.

This Monday, health officials in Dallas reported the 17th death linked to the H1N1 virus in Dallas County according to the article “Dallas County Reports 17th H1N1 Death” by WFAA.com staff on that website. A 51 year old man with an underlying health issue passed away recently and was infected with H1N1 according to Dallas County Health and Human Services.
The health department has been urging everyone to get the H1N1 vaccine to protect themselves from getting severely ill. The county has administered around 10,000 vaccines to residents without Dallas health insurance last week and they now have ran out. There is no word yet when it will be made available.
There are certain people on a priority list to get the vaccine. These include pregnant women, health care workers, people who care for babies under 6 months old, and those between 6 mos and 24 years old and those 25-64 with health conditions. Many are frustrated that there has been such an emphasis on getting the vaccine, yet it is challenging to find the vaccine in many parts of the country.

Residents living in Chicago suburbs pay on average 14.6% less on their health insurance rates according to the article “Health-care Insurance Cheaper in the Suburbs” by Sandra Guy on suntimes.com. This may surprise many carrying Chicago health insurance.
Those living 15 to 25 miles from downtown Chicago pay 12-15% less on their health insurance premium and those living 25-40 miles outside the city pay 20-30% less. This is according to data gathered by Norvax Inc. They also found that people who live in the southern and western suburbs, which are generally considered blue collar, pay 24.5% less for Chicago health insurance. Those who live in the northern areas pay 14.6% less. The findings highlight the cost of health care in these various regions.
Health insurance quotes are definitely being affected by location, but the question is, is this fair? Health insurance companies claim it’s a matter of risk-based pricing. Astonishingly, 26.5% of Chiacgo residents do not carry health insurance according to the latest US Census Bureau report. This may be a direct result of the insurance companies and the way they price their customers as well as regulations created by the state.

According to the article “Humana Profit Rises 65% Despite Commercial Falloff” by The Associated Press on the NYTimes.com, Humana One posted a significant profit because of an increase in membership and premiums from Medicare Advantage.
Humana’s quarterly revenue increased by 8% as enrollment rose 11% from last year in its Medicare Advantage. Enrollment in its plans sold to employers dropped by 7.6% from a year ago. This contributed to a pretax loss in their commercial segment. Many health insurance companies are suffering as employer-sponsored health coverage plans drop because of layoffs and companies going out of business. In October, the 3 largest publicly traded health insurers, incliding United Health Group, WellPoint and Aetna, reported 3rd quarter results which were below expectations.
Humana says it spent approximately $5 million on swine flu related costs in the 3rd quarter. The chief financial officer said the company expected a heavier swine flu season for the 4th quarter. Now more than ever it’s crucial to ensure you have proper health insurance coverage. You can get Humana insurance quotes online to see if you can save some money and get insured.

Dallas County will lead the state of Texas in the percent of kids without insurance according to the article “Dallas County Leads State In Uninsured Children” by Jason Roberson on dallasnews.com. The rate of uninsured children in Dallas County is about triple the national average based on the report released by The Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
This is a statistic that is very upsetting for residents. More than half of the 730,000 kids in Dallas County do not have full access to preventative health care. The report, called “Beyond ABC: Growing Up in Dallas County”, uses state demographic data from 1998-2008 to research the well-being of resident children.
Dallas health insurance isn’t necessarily difficult to find, but families are having difficulty affording rising premiums. Children’s and other hospitals support the initiative to get all children insured because it places them in the care of a regular doctor and eliminates expensive visits to the emergency room. This can prevent the mounting of debt for hospitals. 31% of Dallas County children will be uninsured by 2010 unless something is done.

Many Americans between the ages of 50-64 are losing their health insurance according to the article “Health Insurance Hard to Find for the Newly Unemployed” by Richard Martin TampaBay.com. The reason these people are losing their insurance so rapidly is because of rising unemployment and an increasing number of businesses unable to afford health insurance for their employees.
The AARP estimates that approximately 7 million people between 50-64 are uninsured. This number is growing rapidly and causing much stir in the health care debate in Washington DC. Until recently, most of the focus has been placed on the young uninsured or Medicare for over 65.
The main problem with this generation losing their health insurance is this is when they need it most. Finding health insurance for this group can be challenging as well. Individual health insurance plans for those over 50 cost much more than employer sponsored plans. Many plans exclude pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, obesity, or depression, conditions that often come with age. Studies show that uninsured people are more likely to put off treatment which can lead to declining health. It’s a vicious cycle that hopefully Congress can end.

Consumer Reports recently came out with a survey about consumers and their satisfaction with their current health insurance plan. This is according to the article “Health Plans Get Only So-So Reviews” on the Washington Post’s website.
The survey’s findings were based on responses from 37,481 readers who reported their health insurance experience over a course of a year. The numbers represent a good benchmark for HMO’s and PPO health insurance. 84% of the respondents have an employer based plan they will be able to keep under most proposals being discussed in Congress.
The Consumer Reports National Research Center found that only 64% of readers were very or completely satisfied with their current individual health insurance plan. This shows a drop from the 2007 survey which revealed 67% was satisfied. Based on other Consumer Reports surveys people are less satisfied with health insurance than other industries such as pharmacies and real estate agents. Over 30% of readers are not completely satisfied with their health insurance and this leaves a lot of opportunity for health care reform.

A new poll came out from Mason-Dixon Polling Research Inc. for the Las Vegas Review Journal last week reviewing where Nevadans stand on the health care debate. The survey consisted of phone responses from 500 registered voters in Nevada. Nevada and Las Vegas health insurance issues are definitely a concern for residents. All of this information is according to the article “Most Nevadans Believe Health Reform Includes Tax Hikes” by Calli Fisher at krnv.com, News 4.
The poll shows that 49% of Nevadans are against President Obama’s health care proposal while 43% support it. Only 8% believe no action is necessary. A shocking 77% believe that President Obama’s plan will include an increase in taxes. This goes against what most residents believe should be the main concerns when revamping health care. This includes cheaper health insurance, easier to access and fewer restrictions.
74% of Nevada Democrats support Obama’s plan and only 9% of Republicans approve of it. Some say these numbers include many who don’t fully understand the proposal nor do they understand how it will affect them directly. The poll does have a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5%. It is still to be determined how and when Nevada health insurance will be affected.
