Texas insurance consumer advocate is looking to get rid of the blanket authority of health insurance companies to decide what their policies will cover according to the article “Texas Consumer Advocate Wants Ban on Health Insurers’ Blanket Clauses” by Terrence Stutz on DallasNews.com. This would cause a big impact on individual health insurance in Texas.
Deeia Beck, the Public Insurance Counsel, asked the state’s insurance commissioner to stop provisions present in many health insurance policies, called discretionary clauses. This gives health insurance companies the freedom to decide what benefits will get paid. The health insurance industry strongly opposes this type of change being made.
There are currently 22 states who have banned this clause, and Texas may be next. Insurance Commissioner, Mike Geesline, has held a hearing to consider whether or not to move forward with this proposal. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners has urged its members to stop this practice.

According to the article “Retailers Take Shot At Health Insurance” by Grace Gagliano on Bradenton.com, retail health clinics are becoming a growing trend of supermarkets and drug stores. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida was the first health insurance company to offer health care cards in October. They partnered with Winn-Dixie and in November they partnered with CVS Pharmacy.
The Go Blue health insurance plan is the most accessible for those looking for affordable health care since it guarentees acceptance, but it does exclude coverage on visits to the ER, hospital stays, surgeries, and maternity expenses. This may cause some consumers to avoid purchasing the plan because these are some of the most expensive costs of health care.
Go Blue Florida does have a lot to offer though. Monthly premiums are very low, usually between $24-$59 with in-network, up to $50 paid towards a physician’s bill, up to $50 on dental care, up to $15 paid towards prescriptions and 100% paid towards in-network lab tests at locations which are approved through BCBSFL. Many experts are saying that retailers getting involved in the health insurance business is a new trend that may be growing, according to the article. Some are not sure it will replace in-store health clinics, but it is interesting to see consumers looking for other options as health care costs continue to soar.

Finding health insurance in Florida does not have to be a difficult challenge. According to the article “Florida Health Insurance Buyers Guide” from TransWorldNews, there are certain Florida health insurance regulations that should be understood when shopping around.
Florida health insurance, like most states, are permitted to deny an application for pre-existing conditions. This can potentially be avoided by applying for health insurance as a member of a group plan. There are often restrictions with this option to watch out for though. The group generally must have had coverage for 12 mos previously with no lapse.
According to the article, Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, and New Jersey are the only states who do not allow an application to be turned down because of pre-existing conditions. Florida currently underwrites policies based on previous medical history. In Florida you are able to purchase a conversion policy if you happen to lose coverage if you had 3 months of coverage through a group before it was lost. And there is a limit on the cost. It cannot be more than 200% of the price of a standard rate for an individual health insurance policy.

According to the article “Geisinger Study Aims to Find Fun, Effective Way to Combat Pediatric Obesity” found of their website, childhood obesity in the US is on the rise. With this comes a significant raise in the risk of type 2 diabetes. This has motivated Geisinger Health Plan to do something about it.
Researchers at Geisinger Health System’s Henry Hood Center for Health Research and University of PA received a grant by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to look for creative ways to prevent as well as treat children ages 4-8 who are in the 85th percentile for weight or who have a higher BMI.
Geisinger Health Insurance is taking on this initiative partly because The American Academy of Pediatrics report the prevalence of kids who are obese has doubled over the last 20 years. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 31.9% of children and teens are overweight, and 16.3% are considered obese. These statistics are staggering and shows that something must be done to curb these numbers. Geisinger is heading in the right direction to take action and find ways to decrease obesity in this country.

This Monday, health officials in Dallas reported the 17th death linked to the H1N1 virus in Dallas County according to the article “Dallas County Reports 17th H1N1 Death” by WFAA.com staff on that website. A 51 year old man with an underlying health issue passed away recently and was infected with H1N1 according to Dallas County Health and Human Services.
The health department has been urging everyone to get the H1N1 vaccine to protect themselves from getting severely ill. The county has administered around 10,000 vaccines to residents without Dallas health insurance last week and they now have ran out. There is no word yet when it will be made available.
There are certain people on a priority list to get the vaccine. These include pregnant women, health care workers, people who care for babies under 6 months old, and those between 6 mos and 24 years old and those 25-64 with health conditions. Many are frustrated that there has been such an emphasis on getting the vaccine, yet it is challenging to find the vaccine in many parts of the country.

State Farm, which offers State Farm health insurance, auto, and property insurance, will be donating $1 for every “thank you” sent on the newly launched website, ThanksforBeingThere.com. The money will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation.
The Fisher House Foundation is a military support organization which offers a helping hand to military families whose relatives are being treated at military or VA medical centers across the country as well as Germany. They will be sending donations up to a total of $50,000.
There are 43 Fisher Houses located on 18 military bases and 13 VA medical centers in the US. Homes are operated by the Army, Navy, USAF, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Geisinger Health Plan recently released an update on the 2009 Influenza flu season. This is found in the article “Influenza Update From Geisinger Health System: 900 Cases” by Dr. Lisa Esolen who is the director for Geisinger Health System Infection Control on Poconorecord.com.
They continue to see a steady increase in the number of flu cases with about 900 cases in the last 3 weeks at both of their Pennsylvania hospitals. There have also been about 30 hospitalization cases. Nationally, 46 states have reported widespread influenza cases. Shipments of the H1N1 vaccine continue to be shipped but there are lower quantities than expected. These are first being given to health care providers, schools, and hospitals throughout the state. Currently, there are no public vaccination sites for the H1N1 vaccination since the vaccinations are not plentiful as of now.
Geisinger Health Insurance continues to receive shipments of the H1N1 vaccine, but in small amounts. Most of the vaccines have been used for pregnant people as well as children. Many organizations encourage pregnant women to get vaccinated since they are more likely to get severely sick from the flu virus. It’s important to wash your hands regularly to help limit the spread of the flu.

Dallas County will lead the state of Texas in the percent of kids without insurance according to the article “Dallas County Leads State In Uninsured Children” by Jason Roberson on dallasnews.com. The rate of uninsured children in Dallas County is about triple the national average based on the report released by The Children’s Medical Center Dallas.
This is a statistic that is very upsetting for residents. More than half of the 730,000 kids in Dallas County do not have full access to preventative health care. The report, called “Beyond ABC: Growing Up in Dallas County”, uses state demographic data from 1998-2008 to research the well-being of resident children.
Dallas health insurance isn’t necessarily difficult to find, but families are having difficulty affording rising premiums. Children’s and other hospitals support the initiative to get all children insured because it places them in the care of a regular doctor and eliminates expensive visits to the emergency room. This can prevent the mounting of debt for hospitals. 31% of Dallas County children will be uninsured by 2010 unless something is done.
