Friday, March 19th, 2010

Oxford Health Plan, owned by United Healthcare, has a great section on their website dedicated to men’s health.  Men’s top health concerns are addressed with simple and straightforward information.  The top concerns include heart, prostate, and brain health, diet, exercise, and stress management.

The main focus of men’s health is heart health since heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for men (as well as women).  By maintaining a healthy heart men can prevent life threatening heart diseases sch as heart attacks, heart valve disease, congenital heart disease, strokes, and coronary artery disease.  It’s important to keep up with regular check ups to ensure your health is maintained and you know where you stand.

Men can lower their risk of heart failure by changing some common lifestyle practices.  Some of these include not smoking, eating a variety of fruits and veggies, staying away from high fat foods, staying within a healthy weight, and exercising regularly.  Even walking just 30 minutes a day can be very helpful to maintaining a healthy heart.  Keeping cholesterol and blood pressure numbers in check is extremely important as well.  Oxford Health Insurance strives to ensure their members are educated on how to stay heathy.  Check out their website fill of valuable information to learn more.

Medicare Pay Cuts Bad News for Many Doctors and Patients

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Congress has announced a 21.2% cut in Medicare pay for physicians according to the article “Reduction in Medicare Pay Worries Physicians and Patients” by Amit Pathania on TopNews.com.  This is a concern for many and will affect both Medicare patients and doctors.

With less money allocated towards Medicare doctors, the doctors are forced to see less Medicare patients which may mean many will have to look for a different doctor.  According to one survey of neurosurgeons from 2010, about 60% of doctors are lessening their Medicare patients in their practice, and 40% will be cutting back on consultations by new Medicare patients.  Neurosurgeons have made the decision to not treat new patients.

The Congressional Budget Office states an estimate of a savings of $7.3 Billion in the deficit by pushing the Medicare pay cuts to October 1st.  It’s critical that those on Medicare and using Medicare supplement insurance understand what their doctor’s intentions are with their Medicare patients so that they have ample time to find a new, quality doctor if need be.

Open Enrollment For Medicare Supplement Insurance

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

According to the article “Covering the Bases: Possible Options If You Miss Open Enrollment” by Amy Rubino on hometownglenburnie.com, there is no annual open enrollment period for Medicare Supplement Insurance medigap plans, similar to purchasing individual health insurance.

Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage Plans have certain times you can enroll but it’s a little different for Medigap plans, which are designed to fill in the missing pieces of Original Medicare.  The article points out that the best time to think about enrolling in a Medigap plan is within the first 6 months that you are both age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.

The reason this is the best time is because during this 6 month period the health insurance company that sells you the Medigap policy cannot refuse to sell you a plan and cannot charge you more because of pre-existing conditions.  There are also some other specific situations that would grant you guaranteed right to purchase a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan regardless of your health conditions.

Medicare Beneficiaries Affected By Health Care Reform

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

The WhiteHouse.gov website has information on the new health care reform bill.  They specifically discuss the changes being made to Medicare.  To pay for the health care reform bill there needs to be $313 billion in savings to create a deficit for an overall neutral plan.  The article says that America has the most expensive health care system in the world but points out that we do not get the best results.  Something new is needed to change this.

The majority of the savings which will help pay for the new bill comes from savings in the Medicare and Medicaid system.  There are 3 main points to saving in Medicare which include incorporating productivity adjustments into Medicare payment updates, reducing subsidies to hospitals for treating the uninsured as coverage increases, and pay lower prices for Medicare Part D drugs.

The pharmaceutical industry has committed to slowing the rate of increase of health care costs.  This will also help keep health insurance quotes down as most Americans will be required to carry health insurance coverage.  The Administration is continuously working with Congress to develop the best ways to achieve the necessary savings.

Houston Health Insurance Has A New Advocate

Monday, December 28th, 2009

Houston, Texas elected a new mayor earlier this month named Annise Parker.  According to the article “Houston Is The Largest City to Elect Openly Gay Mayor” by James C. McKinley on NYTimes.com, voters gave a solid victory to this openly gay woman.

There are some smaller cities that have elected openly gay mayors, but this is the largest city in history to do so.  Her success came in a conservative state which makes the victory that much more historic.  Many Houston residents believe this is a huge step forward for the city as diversity is embraced.

Ms. Parker has a challenging job ahead as she faces many important issues such as Houston health insurance.  With Texas suffering from a very high rate of uninsured residents, it’s important that elected officials of major cities such as Parker, make health insurance reform a top priority.  With health insurance weighing heavily on the government’s agenda, health insurance quotes may change noticeably in the coming months.
