Anthem Blue Cross which is a subsidiary of WellPoint, INC has notified some policyholders in California, Maine, Oregon and other states that individual health insurance rates are going to increase. This is according to the article “Individual Insurance Rates Soar in 4 States” by The Associated Press on msnbc.com.
In California the rates are to increase up to 39% by March 1. This is going to be devastating to many individuals who are already struggling to pay bills. In Maine they are asking for increases up to 23% this year. Last year alone they increased rates in Maine by 32%. In Oregon many health insurance companies were granted rate increases of 15% or more this year after about 25% increases from last year.
Health insurance quotes are much more volatile for individual policies when compared to policies under employers and other large groups. Those types of groups often have bargaining tools and a large pool of people to spread out the risk. This makes it tough for those who aren’t part of groups and must get individual health insurance. These rates increases are going to hurt a lot of people financially.

Canadian Kristie Moore, age 30, is 5 1/2 months pregnant and is an Winter Olympic alternate in Vancouver according to the article on Yahoo Sports by Chris Chase. She is an alternate for Team Canada’s curling team and has yet to be called upon but it’s a possibility. It’s a shocking story but from all accounts Moore is fit, in shape, and up for the challenge.
Moore is only the 3rd known Olympic athlete in history to be with child. The first was Swedish figure skater Magda Julin 90 years ago who won a gold medal in her first trimester. In 2006, Germany’s Diana Sartor came in 4th in the skeleton.
Moore found out she was pregnant a few weeks before she was asked to join the team, and when she shared the news with them everyone was supportive. She should have no problem finding health insurance and having proper coverage while she spends this time at the Olympics. With Canada being strong contenders for a gold medal Moore is bound to have an exciting few weeks whether or not she competes.

According to the article “Married, with Benefits: California Mom Terri Carlson Starts Will Marry For Health Insurance Web Site” by Rosemary Black on nydailynews.com, a woman desperate for good health insurance because of a chronic condition has started a campaign online to get a husband with excellent health insurance.
Finding health insurance has not been easy for Terri Carlson because she hasn’t been in the work force long enough to qualify for social security, but her COBRA is about to expire in May. She has an autoimmune disease which prevents her body from fighting infections so she needs to take 10-20 different prescriptions everyday. She knows that finding individual health insurance for herself will not be easy.
The 45 year old divorced mom did realize though, that if she married a man with excellent health benefits she could automatically be placed on their health insurance policy and her problems are solved. Well, her old problems are solved. It seems like she may have a new list of problems if she marries a stranger just for health insurance coverage. This just goes to show how important health care reform really is.

For many American families, COBRA coverage is still too expensive even with the current COBRA subsidy which is temporarily in place. The COBRA subsidy program pays 65% of the monthly premiums for up to 15 months, but still can require a substantial monthly expense, as the average family of four still pays on average $389 per month even with the subsidy.
A recent report by eHealthinsurance.com found that in twenty states, families could save $600 per year ($50/mo) by purchasing a family health insurance plan as oppose to opting for the COBRA coverage. Even with the subsidy!
The twenty states that were found to offer the affordable health insurance identified in the report include: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield Association issued a statement on the US Department of Health and Human Services’ National Summit on Health Care Fraud held in January.
BCBS believes health care fraud is a serious crime and they commend Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Attorney General Eric Holder for bringing the summit together. They bring together private sector stakeholders, law enforcement, Medicare beneficiaries, health insurance companies, and other experts to help combat health care fraud.
Blue Cross Blue Shield companies across the country work together aggressively to discover fraud and educate consumers in an effort to protect them from fraud. BCBS anti-fraud activities resulted in about $350 million in savings in 2008. BCBS wants to protect all of their customers, from Medicare customers to Go Blue health insurance. They continue to work with the Obama administration to fight against this very expensive crime which compromises an effective health care system.

The diet should include moderate portions of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and low fat dairy. It’s also important to exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight. Limiting certain foods is important as well, including saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, salt and added sugar.

The struggling economy is causing significant issues for many states which provide health plans to assist low-income families. Many states are being forced to pare back these health insurance programs at the worst possible time…when the number of unemployed Americans continue to rise and people need assistance the most.
The methods by which various states attempt to shave the costs of these programs range from cutting benefits, to freezing new enrollment, to raising the costs that must be picked up by the enrollee.
Among some of the state sponsored low-income health plans that are in trouble include:
- Washington Basic Health - Will fold in July unless $160 Million in additional Revenue. About 300 Washington residents are added to waiting list each day.
- CoverTN - Tennessee’s state sponsored program. Halted in December.
- CharterOak Health Plan - Connecticut’s program. Must freeze enrollment this year unless lawmakers can find more money to keep it open.
- AdultBasic - Pennsylvania’s Program for low income adults. Increasing fees. Waiting list doubled in 2009
- General Assistance medical Care Program - Minnesota’s Program will end in March, existing members will be moved over to MinnesotaCare.
Among other viable options for low-income adults who are looking to lower their monthly health insurance costs, while insuring that they will be covered if they fall ill or are in a serious accident, would be to increase the deductible of their existing health plan. This will keep monthly premiums down, but will require greater out of pocket costs if you should need to utilize medical care.
