Ohio Health Insurance Fighting Reform

Health care reform continues to be a hot topic throughout the nation, and Ohio health insurance is taking a stand.  The article “Ohio’s Battle for Health Care Freedom” by Ed Meese and Jack Painter on Politico.com talks about what is driving Ohioans to fight against Obama’s health care reform bill.

A recent poll shows that a majority of Ohio residents support the new amendment being put forth by the Ohio government.  Ohioans are circulating petitions for an amendment to the state’s constitution to avoid health care reform.  The Health Care Freedom Amendment, known as Issue 3, amends the Ohio Bill of Rights to say many things in regards to the new health care law.  Here are the three parts saying no law or rule may:

  1. Compel anyone to participate in a health care system
  2. Prohibit the purchase or sale of heath care or health care insurance
  3. Impose a fine or penalty for that purchase

The amendment directly questions the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act which should be fully implemented by 2014.  The initiative within the state seems very strong, but will it be enough to reach Congress?  And will it ultimately change anyone’s mind?  There are pros and cons to health care reform and regardless of the direction taken, some individuals will be upset and fight for change.  It’s a constant battle that surely has no end in sight.
