The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan

More and more Americans are facing chronic health conditions which is making it more difficult for them to obtain affordable health insurance.  Health care reform has aimed to fix this problem by implementing the Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) according to the article “Uninsurable: A Notion of the Past?” by Omar Sommereyns.

This plan targets a large group of people who struggle to get quality coverage by offering a transitional bridge to 2014 when insurers will not be allowed to deny health insurance applicants with pre-existing conditions such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and asthma.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) found in a recent survey that 36% of Americans with chronic conditions face huge difficulties obtaining quality coverage so these proves to be an extremely valuable program.  To read more on this fascinating topic, check out the article referenced above.
