The youth of America needs health care reform more than anyone since a large percentage of them are choosing not to carry personal health insurance. Unfortunately, they have not shown the support for reform that they should be. The youth of America continue to be the the highest uninsured group out there.
According to the article “Youth Gone Wild, Without Health Insurance” by ECHealthInsurance, about 36% of young Americans oppose health care reform which is surprising considering that research shows about 33% of youth under 30 are uninsured. The researchers at Pew also said Generation X has 19% covered, baby boomers have 12% covered and seniors are astoundingly high at 97% coverage thanks to Social Security and Medicare.
While many people under 30 do support health care reform and the public option specifically, they seem realistic that it isn’t going to automatically change their current situation. Individual health insurance can be extremely expensive for young workers with entry level positions. Even with a college degree, unemployment is high and these young people are prioritizing their payments. With many of them being in good health they are foregoing the large bill of health insurance. To add to the problem, more and more employers are dropping their health insurance coverage from their benefits package leaving even more young Americans uninsured.
