Florida Rejects Health Care Reform Grant

According to the article “Florida Rejects Another $1 Million Health Care Reform Grant” by Janet Zink on TampaBay.com, state officials are taking steps to support the judge’s ruling that the federal health care law is unconstitutional.  They have rejected a $1 million federal grant awarded to the Agency for Health Care Administration to plan a system required by the new reform where consumers can compare health plans and health insurance quotes.

This happens to be the second federal health care reform grant rejected by Florida.  Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty returned a $1 million grant that was supposed to provide a resource for consumers to keep track of insurance rate changes.  Earlier this week US District Judge Roger Vinson ruled that the federal law is unconstitutional since it requires people to buy health insurance or receive a tax penalty.

Governor Rick Scott does not want to spend any time or money on the new law until the Supreme Court rules.  This includes the most most recent grant rejected this week.  Not all Florida representatives are supporting this move.  US Rep Kathy Castor, D-Tampa, wrote a letter to McCarty urging him to reconsider their decision to reject the money.  Struggles will continue as Florida state officials work towards their goal.
