Americans are having a hard time finding affordable individual health insurance and some are worried they’ll be forced to give up their current health insurance plan with the enactment of the Affordable Health Care Plan.
According to the article “If You Like Your Health Insurance Plan, Keep It” by Matthew R. Corso on Tribunact.com, most of the 133 million Americans with employer based health insurance through big companies will maintain coverage. Large employer sponsored plans already offer most of the benefits that the health care reform bill will require.
About 42 million people are insured through small businesses and they will probably transition to new plans with all of the protections required by the new law. The roughly 17 million consumers in the individual health insurance market will receive the required protections sooner than later. About 40-60% of people in the individual health insurance market normally switch plans within a year. Shopping around is in their best interest as rates are constantly changing and it can be a very competitive market. The new Affordable Health Care plan is designed to help Americans get fair and affordable health insurance, regardless of which route you choose, including Medicare recipients.
