Dental Insurance

According to the article found on USNews.com, 1 out of every 4 Americans under the age of 65 do not have dental insurance.  Statistics from 2008 show that employment, education, and race all affect access to dental care.

About 73% of Americans under 65 had dental coverage in 2008, but approximately 45 million Americans had no coverage at all according to the report from the US National Center for Health Statistics.  Barabara Bloom and Robin A. Cohen from the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, Division of Health Interview Statistics say that a primary indicator of access to dental care in the US is whether or not the person carries dental insurance.

About 80% of those with employer-based health insurance, or PPO health insurance, had dental coverage, but only 30% did of those directly buying insurance.  The higher the person’s income the more likely they were to carry dental insurance and around 40% of those with less than a highschool degree had no dental insurance at all.  Important information as people are encouraged to receive dental care for their overall health.
