AARP Medicare Supplements Undergoing Changes

AARP Medicare supplements and other Medigap policies are undergoing some changes starting June 1 according to the article “Medigap Changes May Be A Time to Shop” by Teresa McUsic on star-telegram.com.  This may be a great time for seniors to shop around and see if they can save any money on their health insurance rates.

Amanda Fredrikson, director of advocacy for AARP in Texas says unnecessary change can be confusing and scary so seniors should weigh their options.  They want to send the message that if seniors like their current plan they should stay where they are.  With that said, if consumers think they can save money on their monthly premiums, this could be a good time to shop around for medicare supplement insurance plans.

Jesse Swagerty, an Arlington Medigap insurance agent, says that seniors who shop around could end up saving about $80 per month on their health insurance premium.  He also believes there’s no reason to not to at least look around.  Even a small amount of savings can be a big deal for those seniors on fixed incomes, especially in these tough economic times.  Health care reform has the primary goal of making better health care options for Americans, including seniors.  With more options and more competitive prices, seniors should feel comfortable to shop around and ensure they are getting the best deal.
