Florida Health Insurance Consumers Get a Vote

Many government officials, especially Republicans, are frustrated with the recent passage of the health care reform bill.  Specifically, many are concerned about the health insurance mandates placed on Americans across the nation.  Health insurance companies such as BCBSFL and Go Blue Florida are unsure how this is going to affect their business but they are concerned.

According to the article “Florida: Health Overhaul on November Ballot” by Gary Fineout on nytimes.com, voters will get the chance to decide whether or not to ban the health insurance mandates.  This vote will be on November’s ballot.  The Florida legislature, which is controlled by Republicans, voted this week to place a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that could ban any laws which require someone to join the health care system.

The Florida legislators believe the amendment was necessary to block an attack on individual rights put forth by Congress earlier this year.  This has been the underlying debate throughout the US as health care reform has been decided.  Florida health insurance may change the way reform is implemented in their state.  In order for this legislation to pass, 60% of Florida residents will need to approve the measure.
